Life and work

The son of a well-known journalist and lawyer who was involved in the Indian independence, grew up in what is now the southern Indian state of Kerala. He attended the Maharajas College, Ernakulam and published early poems in a local magazine. To participate in the so-called August battles against the British colonial power in 1942, he was sentenced to nine months imprisonment. He then worked as a journalist for several newspapers and radio stations, including Chennai and Kozhikode. During this time he also began to write lyrics for communist agitators. During the rebellion in Punnapra - Vayalar (1946 ), he wrote a song titled Vayalar Garjikkunnu, whose first line Uyarum Njan Nadake ... quickly became extremely popular. The rulers ( Diwan ) of the then still existing princely State of Travancore then procured the expulsion P. Bhaskarans; the song was - as others from his pen - forbidden.

Bhaskarans first contribution to a film song was in 1949 for a Tamil production, he contributed a few lines in Malayalam to a multilingual song in. But a year later, in 1950, he wrote his first complete lyrics for the film Chandrika. In 1954, he staged jointly with Ramu Kariat the neorealist film Neelakkuyil, who won the first National Film Award ( President's Silver Medal ) for a Malayalam film. The songs that created P. Bhaskaran for this film are very well known today.
