P. Chidambaram

P. Chidambaram ( Palaniappan Chidambaram, Tamil: . ப சிதம்பரம்; born September 16, 1945 in Kandanur, Tamil Nadu ) is currently Finance Minister of India. Previously, he was already Finance Minister ( May 2004-November 2008 ) and Minister of the Interior. He belongs to the United Progressive Alliance ( Progress Association ) (UPA, led by the Indian National Congress ), which provides the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He was appointed and sworn in November 2008 after the resignation of Shivraj Patil to succeed.

P. Chidambaram was finance minister since 2004 in the same office and that of the United Front under Vajpayee from 1996 to 1998 and before that Minister of State in the Rajiv Gandhi / Narasimha Rao government in various ministries.

Biography

P. Chidambaram was the son of L. Palaniappa Chettiar and Lakshmi Achi and was born in the village in the district of Sivaganga Kandanur of present-day state of Tamil Nadu in a Hindu family of the Caste of Chettiar. The Chettiar have brought it as a business to great influence in the southern Indian state. After schooling in the Madras Christian College in Chennai Hr.Sec.School he received the B.Sc. in statistics from Presidency College, Bachelor of Law (BL ) at the Madras Law College and a Masters in Business Administration ( MBA) from Harvard Business School, Harvard University. From 1969 he worked as a lawyer at the Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court in Chennai and at various high courts, also in New Delhi. In the Lok Sabha, he was first elected in 1984 (re- elections in 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2004).

He is with Nalini Chidambaram, lawyer, married and they are the parents of the only son Karti P. Chidambaram.
