P/2007 R5 (SOHO)

P/2007 R5 ( SOHO ) is the first officially periodic comet discovered the solar observatory SOHO.

The comet was discovered in September 1999. In September 2003, he was again observed, but it was assumed that it is a different comet. Sebastian Hoenig speculated in 2005 that it would be the same comet due to the similarity of the two orbits of comets. He said the return of the comet for the September 11, 2007 correctly predicted.

In his 2007 Perihelpassage neither a comet -like tail, nor a coma was observed, which is why P/2007 R5 was also initially considered an asteroid. However, its brightness increased when approaching the sun by a factor of about a million, which in turn is a comet- like behavior. Because of these properties is believed that it is an extinct comet nucleus at P/2007 R5 ( SOHO).

On September 6, 2011, a further Perihelpassage of B. Zhou was observed.
