Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences

The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical ( PIMS ), headquartered at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver is a decentralized applied mathematical research institute, which was founded in 1996. Founders were a consortium of five universities in Alberta and British Columbia in western Canada, and later included Saskatchewan and the U.S. state of Washington ( University of Washington ), such that the institution is established binational.

Its objectives are the promotion of research, education and training at the university and for school teachers, interdisciplinary collaboration with other subject areas, international cooperation and exchange, and public relations for mathematics. They have branches at all nine participating universities ( and Portland State University and the University of Northern British Columbia) and operate decentralized. They house research groups (Collaborative Research Groups, CRG ), post - doctoral programs and organize workshops and conferences. They also organize programs and competitions for school children ( with special support programs for native Indian ) and publish a magazine for this Pi in the Sky.

One focus is on education and research in mathematical biology and industrial mathematics.

It is one of three major national research institutes for mathematics in Canada, next to the oldest Institute, Centre de Recherches Mathématiques the (CRM ) in Montreal and the Fields Institute in Toronto. With these, the PIMS will award the CRM -Fields - PIMS Prize.
