In the late 14th century, the palace ( Paço pt ) was built in the city, with two towers and a connecting balcony above the arcades (pt. Arcos ), after which the name was passed on to the community. According to legend, King Manuel I looked at from the balcony when the fleet of Vasco da Gama set out for the journey to India.

The municipality was formerly known for its quarries, which are, however, now an obstacle. Thus, the Arco Rua Augusta ( Arch of Triumph) was built in Lisbon because of stones of these works.
