Palace of Placentia

The Palace of Placentia was an English Royal Palace.

History

Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, was from 1426 to 1437 on the south bank of the Thames at Greenwich build a castle, the Court was called Bella. After Humphrey was charged with treason in 1447 and died in unexplained circumstances, the palace fell to Queen Margaret of Anjou. She called to the palace in the Palace of Placentia, at times, the palace was described as Palace of pleasaunce.

The palace was for the next two centuries one of the most important royal palaces. Under Henry VII, the palace was completely rebuilt and is described as a red brick building. It contained a huge banquet hall in the park was a large show grounds. 1491 Henry VIII was born in the palace, in him, he married his first wife Catherine of Aragon and his fourth wife Anne of Cleves. The palace was a favorite residence of his second wife, Anne Boleyn, which was finally brought from the palace to the tower where she was executed. The daughters of Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I were born in the palace and seized the palace during their reigns as a summer residence. During the reign of James I and Charles I, the palace was expanded to include the above location, Queen's House, which was started as a new summer residence of Queen Anne. During the English Civil War, the palace fell into disrepair. For a time he served as a POW camp.

1664 Charles II was erected in place of the old palace, a new building by John Webb. The old palace was torn down for it, and on either side of an aligned on the axis of the Queen's House 74 -acre Greenwich Park to designs by Le Nôtre was created in the 1660s. From the new royal palace, however, only the east wing of the present King Charles block was built until 1669, before construction was stopped by lack of money .. It was not until the reign of William III. Greenwich was built from 1694 instead of the palace, designed by Christopher Wren Hospital for old sailors and wounded on the premises.
