Palaiochori, Chalkidiki

Paleochori (Greek Παλαιοχώρι (n. sg ). Lit. translation, the old village '; alternative transcription Palaiochori ) is a town on the Greek peninsula Chalkidiki. Paleochori located inland on the northern edge of the Cholomondas Mountain. Approx. 20 km southwest lies Polygiros, about 80 km northwest lies Thessaloniki, Megali Panagia is located 7 km to the south and Arnea 5km west. The settlement Paleochori is a village in the municipality of Arnea the 2011 newly created municipality of Aristotelis.

History

The place is mentioned as a castle Neposi in texts of archives of the monasteries on Mount Athos in 1320 and 1441 .. Between 1478 to 1568 the population grew from 24 to about 100 families.

In 1793, the French ambassador visited in Thessaloniki Espirit m. Cuisinery Paleochori. In the Greek War of Independence the village was destroyed by the Ottomans and Turks. In the Greek Civil War, it was attacked on 14 August 1948 by communist rebels.

It is known Giorgos Zorbas from Paleochori inspiration of the novel Zorba by Nikos Kazantzakis.

A street is named after the patriarch Vartholomaios A ', who visited Paleochori in June 1999.
