Palais Gomperz

The Palais Gomperzes is a Viennese palace in the 1st district of Vienna Innere city, Kärntner Ring 3

History

It was built by Ludwig Förster 1860/61 and acquired by brothers Julius and Max Gomperzes, both of which were successful as a banker in Vienna. They were major players in the economy of the monarchy. Julius Gomperzes was a member of the Moravian Diet, sat since 1871 /72 Imperial Parliament, was 1872 President of the Brno Jewish community, was a hereditary member of the Austrian mansion and raised to the peerage in 1879. Max Gomperzes in 1850 Vice- President of the Brno Chamber of Commerce. In 1858 he moved to Vienna, became a director, President and Honorary President of Creditanstalt for trade and commerce, operating a banking house, was president of the Bohemian Western Railway and the Prague Iron Industry Company and was raised to the peerage in 1877.

The palace is built in the style of historicism. It has six floors. The ground floor houses several shops. Under the balcony on the second floor four statues are erected, symbolizing the four Muses (dance, poetry, painting, music).
