Pale-legged Warbler

The Peru Warbler ( Basileuterus signatus ) is a small passerine bird in the family of warblers ( Parulidae ).

Peru Warbler reach a body length of 13 to 14 centimeters and weigh around 12 to 13 grams. Adult Peru Warbler and young birds from the first year wearing an olive head and top feathers and a yellow underside plumage with olive flanks. The subspecies Basileuterus see signatus wearing a short yellow Superciliarstreifen which terminates behind the eye; the subspecies Basileuterus see flavovirens a wider short yellow Superciliarstreifen and narrow black crest side strips. Juvenile Peru Warbler wearing a dark brown plumage, the wings and the tail feathers are olive and the tummy white gray.

The distribution area extends from Peru through Bolivia to Argentina. Peru warblers inhabit in pairs or in small groups moist forests mostly at altitudes 1800-3050 meters. In Argentina they are to be found up to an altitude of 1500 meters.

There are two recognized subspecies:

  • Basileuterus signatus signatus Berlepsch & proud man, 1906 - Südzentralperu
  • Basileuterus signatus flavovirens Todd, 1929 - Southern Peru, Bolivia and northern Argentina

It is possible that there is an unwritten third subspecies, their occurrence is limited to Colombia.
