Palmi Cathedral

The Co-Cathedral San Nicola in Palmi is the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oppido Mamertina - Palmi in the Italian region of Calabria.

History

Detailed reports on the age of the church are missing. Between 1310 and 1311 it was first mentioned. Before that, St. Nicholas was the only church in the village.

St. Nicholas was mentioned again in 1532. In 1586 it was described as the Church of "Santa Claus Brothers" near the city wall. In 1664, the Brotherhood was founded by Purgatory in their place.

On August 25, 1741 reached the urban clergy and the authorities that the church was raised to the collegiate church what. By the Bishop of Miletus Marcello Filomarini after receiving the bull of Pope Benedict XIII was performed.

The church was rebuilt from 1740 to 1743 was destroyed by an earthquake on February 5, 1783. In March 1786 it was rebuilt.

Building

The facade of the Romanesque Revival building is equipped with canopy, porch and a small portico on four pillars. On the left side is the city bell tower of the church.

On the marble main altar is a valuable icon " Our Lady of the letter " with child ( 1774) is attached.

In a recently built chapel is a shrine with the relics of "holy hair ".
