Pampa del Tamarugal

Pampa del Tamarugal is a tectonic depression in the north of Chile in the Atacama desert.

Geography

The Pampa del Tamarugal extends between the Peruvian border (17 ° S ) and about the height of Copiapo (27 ° S). The plane is on average at an altitude of 1000 m above M.

A continuous depression with many salt lakes, such as the Salar de Atacama, lies between the Precordillera before Hochkordillere of the Andes. In the Andes lies the northern volcanic chain in Chile.

In the Pampa del Tamarugal are a number of dry river beds. There are even sometimes forests of Tamarugo trees ( Prosopis Tamarugo ). This acacia -like trees have up to 40 m deep roots.

Tourism

The nature reserve Reserva Nacional Pampa del Tamarugal located about 70 kilometers east of Iquique in the cities of Pozo Almonte and Huara. It includes approximately 1022 km ². In addition to the Atacama desert salt lakes, volcanoes, geysers and the old Salpeterförderanlagen are the main attractions.

The World Heritage Site, the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works, you will find 50 km east of Iquique.

The largest copper open pit mine in the world Chuquicamata to Calama is also located in this area.
