Pampaneira

Pampaneira is a municipality in the Spanish province of Granada, in the Alpujarra, the southern slope of the Sierra Nevada.

The place is around 1,060 meters above sea level at the Poqueira Ravine, a tributary of the Rio Guadalfeo. Along with the more northerly villages Capileira and Bubión the place was declared a Conjunto histórico - artístico.

The moorish Pampaneira has already received several awards for its townscape: The white, cube-shaped houses with flat roofs pull in terraces up the slopes and are connected by narrow, steep lanes. In the barren mountain region residents had to rely on a sophisticated irrigation system and terrace economy. The favored by the mild Mediterranean climate landscape in the southern Sierra Nevada was inhabited by the Berber early as the 8th century and formed in the 16th century, the last refuge of the Moors in Spain. After the expulsion of the Moors the area of Christians from the present province of León and Galicia was repopulated.

Pampaneira is today starting point for hiking in the Alpujarras, tourism is an important economic factor. How many of the surrounding villages is Pampaneira a weaving center for the production of colored blankets, fabrics and carpets. In numerous small shops objects from the arts and crafts and local culinary specialties also be offered as a souvenir. Each autumn takes place the most important trade fair in the region for crafts, agriculture and tourism here.
