Pandinus

Emperor Scorpion ( Pandinus imperator)

Pandinus is a genus of Scorpionidae family from the order of scorpions. The species of this genus are distributed from Senegal on the west coast of Africa to East Africa, two species occur in Yemen. Most animals live in tropical conditions, some are semi- social, ie they live in groups (usually siblings) and hunt together.

The largest species of this genus is Pandinus imperator ( Emperor Scorpion German, African giant scorpion or Large forest scorpion ). Three types ( Pandinus imperator, Pandinus dictator, Pandinus gambiensis ) are protected under the CITES Appendix II because they were caught much to be kept as a pet in Europe. The animals are more pungent lazy and defend themselves rather than with their large pedipalps with the sting, in addition they have a very weak venom, making it suitable as a terrarium.

The Pandinus species can be the basis of their high number of trichobothria of eg Heterometrus species differ; they have 26 or more at the shear hand and 22 to 30 on the Pedipalpentibia.
