Pantalone

Pantalone ( from the Italian word for " pants" and possibly also of piante leone as mocking term for the Venetian merchants after the fall of the Venetian Republic as a trade power, see Karl Riha ) is one of the least altered masks of the Italian Commedia dell'arte. He is an old, enterprising, at the same time avaricious, mostly amorous and always cheated dude in yellow slippers, red jerkin and tight red tights ( Pantaloons ), and a black cape occurs, usually his wallet clearly visible at the hips and a pointed beard wearing. On engravings by Jacques Callot and paintings by Antoine Watteau he is often depicted the torso prevented. It belongs to the group of the Dottore Vecchi (Italian: the ancients ), which Zanni, the servants are facing.

As the central protagonist of the story he is the worthy and standing in high esteem older gentleman. However, he embarks on Free Feet, is intent on business benefits, is considered the father of his daughter suspiciously or grabbed by physical ailments and other mishaps, also often all at the same time.
