History and Development

1956, the construction of a self- propelled gun was being considered in Switzerland. Due to the Group on Arms Services ( GRD) and Federal Konstruktionswerkstätte K W Thun were elaborated studies. But only in 1966 started the actual development and the construction of a 15 cm gun on a chassis 42 of the tank 61 were then constructed four vehicles on the chassis of the tank 68. These possessed a 15.5 cm tank gun 68 The firing distance was a maximum of 30 km and had a rate of fire of 6 rounds per minute.

The tank gun 68 had a fully automatic loading device. Due to technical and financial problems, the project was never pursued. The Swiss Army procured instead the American self-propelled howitzer M 109 The four vehicles were from 1972-1975 only for trials in the use of troops. Today only two cars available, one is the Tank Museum Thun the other, which is fully operational, is in the military museum in Full.
