Paolo Romeo

Cardinal Paolo Romeo ( born February 20, 1938 in Acireale, Catania, Italy Province) is Archbishop of Palermo.

Life

Paolo Romeo, the fifth of nine children, studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the first seminar in Acireale, later, as a seminarian at the Almo Collegio Capranica and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. At the Lateran University, he received his doctorate in canon law. On March 18, 1961, he received the sacrament of Holy Orders. He worked as a priest in Rome, including as a supervisor of a scout group.

1967 Paolo Romeo entered the service of the Holy See and was called by Pope Paul VI. January 3, 1968 Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) appointed. For the diplomatic service of the Holy See, he worked in the papal missions to the Philippines, Belgium, Luxembourg and to the European Community, in Venezuela and in Rwanda and Burundi. In 1976 he was appointed to the State Secretariat.

On December 17, 1983, Pope John Paul II appointed titular bishop of Vulturia and appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti. The bishop ordained Romeo on January 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Basilica. From 1990 to 1999 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia. Then Paolo Romeo was until 2001 Nuncio to Canada. 2001 Romeo was Apostolic Nuncio to Italy and San Marino.

On 19 December 2006 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. Archbishop of Palermo. The solemn inauguration took place in the Cathedral of Palermo on 10 February 2007.

Paolo Romeo is chairman of the Sicilian bishops' conference and honorary Konventualkaplan of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Since 2006 he is Grand Prior of the Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem for Italy and Sicily.

In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal priest with the pro hac vice levied for the titular church of Santa Maria title Diakonia Odigitria dei Siciliani in the College of Cardinals. He participated in the conclave of 2013, was elected to the Pope Francis. This appointed Cardinal Romeo on April 8, 2013 also appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi di Sicilia.
