Paolo Serrao

Paolo Serrao (* April 11, 1830 in Filadelfia, Vibo Valentia, † March 17, 1907 in Naples) was an Italian composer and music educator.

Serrao, who attracted attention as a child as a gifted pianist, had at the Real Collegio di Musica in Naples piano lessons at the Clementi - pupil Francesco Lanza. He also studied counterpoint with Carlo Conti. His most important teacher was Saverio Mercadante, in 1840 took over the management of the Real Collegio.

1852 taught Serrao at the Conservatoire of Naples, since 1863 he has held the chair of counterpoint and composition. Since 1878 he was director of the Conservatory. Among his pupils were Giuseppe Martucci, Umberto Giordano, Leopoldo Mugnone, Michele Esposito, Francesco Cilea, Franco Alfano, Luigi Denza and Alessandro Longo.

1870 Serrao Director of the Teatro del Fondo, 1873 director of the Teatro di San Carlo, where he conducted the first performance of Verdi's opera Aida in Naples. In addition to several operas Serrao composed orchestral works and chamber music, church music and many piano transcriptions of contemporary operas.
