Papovaviridae is now superseded, akronymisierte acronym formed from papilloma, polyoma virus family for a former - and simian vacuolating virus 40 This classification is abolished in the official Virus taxonomy, and today form Polyomaviridae and Papillomaviridae their own families.

Originally Papovaviridae called family included viruses with double-stranded, circular DNA and an icosahedral capsid without viral envelope. Papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses are spread worldwide and occur both in humans and in primates, cattle, rodents and birds.
