Para Red is a red azo pigment. It is one of the first azo colorants that could be synthesized industrially (1885 ) and was used for dyeing wool and cotton. Today it is used, for example, even in colored pencils, but also in cheap printing inks and plastics.

Production

Para red can be prepared by an azo coupling reaction of diazotized 4 -nitroaniline, and β -naphthol.

Safety

Many azo pigments and dyes are suspected to be carcinogenic. This stems partly from the fact that industrially produced azo dyes may still contain traces of the synthesis of the starting materials. In most cases, these are aromatic amines, many of which are also known as carcinogenic or suspected to cause cancer.
