Paradise Garage

The Paradise Garage was a style-defining clubs in New York City, which existed from 1976 to 1987.

Founded by Michael Brody and music label boss Mel Cheren in a former garage in the 84 King Street, the club was an important meeting place for the gay black community. It was basically not serve alcohol. This allowed for longer ( on the legal situation ) opening times until well into the next day. The club had a high-quality sound system and should face the music and dancing in the foreground. The club is a mix of early house and disco, the later so-called Garage House, performed by the resident DJ Larry Levan established. Many live acts had appearances here, including Gloria Gaynor, Patti LaBelle or Grace Jones.

After completion of the club activity, the building was back to a garage, now for the fleet of the company Verizon Communications.
