Appearance

The Siebenfarbentangare has a body length of about 14 cm and a weight of about 20.5 g The top of the head and the sides of the head are apple green, short and stiff springs make these games appear scaly. The dark circles are black. The top is mostly black, the rump dark red, sometimes the lower part yellowish orange. The upper tail-coverts are colored golden yellow. Over the shoulders, a narrow strip of turquoise attracts. The throat is purple, the rest of the underside predominantly turquoise blue. The lower center of the chest, the abdomen and under tail-coverts are black.

Systematics and distribution

The Siebenfarbentangare lives in northern South America, where it grows at altitudes up to 1450 m. It is found in Venezuela, Brazil, eastern Colombia to northern Bolivia and the Guyanas. Despite its scientific name, it does not occur in Chile.

This Tangarenart can be distinguished at the different back color. The nominate is easy to determine. The subspecies chlorocorys, paradisea coelicolor and all have a different colored yellow back plumage, with paradisea has a yellow-orange. Very good to see is also Tangara chilensis coelicolor with her ​​blue head.

Way of life

The diet consists of berries, fruits and insects. It makes very lively teams of 4 to 20, sometimes more individuals who often move together with other bird species or mixed flocks of birds through the treetops.
