The Canary Speckled Wood ( Pararge xiphioides ) is a butterfly ( butterfly ) of the family Nymphalidae ( Nymphalidae ).

Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 40 to 50 millimeters. They vary relatively strongly in drawing and coloring. The top is reddish brown with yellowish to orange- red spots as well as black, white cored eye patch. On the fore wings is located near the wingtips of an eye spot, near which several yellow spots are lined up parallel to the outer edge of the wing. The hind wings have three to four eye spots next to each other. The outer edges of the front and rear wings are colored thin and whitish. The outer edge of the front wing is not indented, as opposed to the rear wings. The underside of the forewing is brown with numerous whitish, yellowish and black spots and has an eye spot at the same location as on the top. However, he is on the bottom white. The basic coloration of the undersides of the hind wings is ocher and light brown marbled, partly also with roughly parallel to the outer edge extending jaggy. The eye-spots are formed as dark brown, very slurred and bright nucleated patches.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The Canary Speckled Wood is only found in the Canaries Islands La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It is one of the most common butterflies in the Canaries. The animals live from about sea level to 2,000 meters in wooded areas as well as in cultivated land and in gardens.

Way of life

It makes several generations per year; the moths can therefore be found all year round. The caterpillars feed on various plants, but mainly of forest Zwenke ( Brachypodium sylvaticum ), Red bentgrass ( Agrostis capillaris ), Unterbrochenähriger sedge ( Carex divulsa ) and Forster's Wood-rush ( Luzula forsteri ).
