Party of National Progress

The Tautos pažangos partija (TPP, German: Progressive Party of the People) is a conservative nationalist political party in Lithuania. She was especially in the founding period of the Republic of Lithuania of importance.

1917-1924

The beginnings of the party are in the upheavals in Russia due to the First World War. With the democratic revolution in February 1917, the democratic forces of the various peoples of the Russian Empire began to take shape. Thus was formed in February 1917 in St. Petersburg, the Lithuanian National Council. One of the six parties was the Progressive Party of the people, which had been established during the year 1916 by Juozas Kubilius, Liudas Noreika ( 1884-1928 ) and the priest Juozas Tumas - Vaižgantas. All three were politically active in St. Petersburg, Noreika as a publicist (Journal Lietuvos balsas, German voice Lithuania ), Kubilius and Tumas Vaižgantas in the Fund for the Lithuanian displaced persons of war.

At the same time, representatives of the Progressive Party in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, occupied at that time by the troops of the German Empire, to the local independence movement part. The most important representatives were Antanas Smetona and Augustinas Voldemaras, although they occurred at the Lithuanian State Council, which is later renamed the State Council as a non-party. The main effort of the Progress Party, the unconditional restoration of state independence of Lithuania, in whatever form of government. Antanas Smetona was one of the signers of the declaration of independence of 16 February 1918 and was elected in April 1919, after the independence of Lithuania had become by the end of the German occupation reality as the first President of Lithuania.

In the subsequent elections to the Constitution giving the Seimas in April 1920, the TTP could gain no seats. Also in the following elections in 1922 and 1923, she went home empty-handed. During this time positioned the leading representatives, Smetona and Voldemaras, as a sharp opponent of parliamentarism and the Communists. The given them out of magazines (including Lietuvos balsas and Vairas ( German steering wheel) ) were banned regularly and Voldemaras condemned even to a longer jail term (Fall 1923).

In August 1924, the merger was completed with the economic and political union of agricultural workers ( Lithuanian Ekonominės ir politinės žemdirbių sąjunga ) and the renaming of the party in the Union of Lithuanian nationalists ( LTS). As such, they could at the third Seimas elections in May 1926 win three seats in parliament.

Refounding of 1992/94

Following disagreements in the fraction of the Lithuanian nationalists, the end of 1990 from 12 deputies of the Sąjūdis imaging in the Constitution Seimas had formed of, five deputies joined in January 1992 at the fraction of the progress of the people, of May 1992, the foundation of the movement progress of the people followed. In the parliamentary elections in October 1992, however, this movement could not win seats (1.1% of valid votes ).

On 28 May 1994, the movement to the first party in the Progressive Party of the People ( TPP ) was converted in follow up since then especially to their predecessors Party. It is, however, remained a national conservative faction in the current political landscape until further notice.
