Pasquale del Pezzo

Pasquale del Pezzo ( born 2 May 1859 in Berlin, † June 20, 1936 in Naples, from 1889 Duke ( Duke ) of Cajanello Markgraf ( Marchese ) of Campodisola ) was an Italian mathematician.

Life

The del Pezzo are an old Neapolitan family of the Republic of Amalfi arise. He was the son of the Neapolitan ambassador in Prussia Duca del Pezzo di Gaetano Cajanello (1830-1889) was born and his wife Donna Principessa Maria Angelica born Caracciolo di Torella ( 1836-1921 ).

He then studied at the University of Naples and made law in 1880 his doctorate two years later in 1882 he made his doctorate in mathematics. He corresponded with many famous mathematicians of his time as well as with Magnus Gösta Mittag-Leffler. So he got to his divorced sister and writer Anne Charlotte Leffler (1849-1892) know. The two married in 1890.

As of November 29, 1894 del Pezzo was Professor of Higher Geometry at the University of Naples, from 3 December 1905 for projective geometry. He was dean of natural sciences and later twice Rector of the University, initially from 26th September 1909 to 1911 and then again from August 4, 1919 until 1921. Meanwhile, from 1914 to 1917 he was mayor of Naples.

As of October 6, 1919 until his death he was a member of the Italian Senate. He was there first for the Liberal Democrats, later for the Democratic Union. From 1932 to 1934 he was president of the Academy of Sciences.

He was honored for his achievements in many cases, he was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and of many mathematical societies in Europe. In mathematics, his name is known by the Del - Pezzo surface.
