Patna ( Hindi: पटना, Patna ) is the capital of the state of Bihar, in northeastern India. It was formerly known under the name Kusumpura, Pushpapura, Pataliputra and Muslims Asimabad. Patna lies on the southern banks of the Ganges, has approximately 1.7 million inhabitants, as agglomeration 2.0 million ( 2011 census ) and is an important country trade center (rice, corn, sugar cane, sesame ).

Attractions

For the Sikhs, Patna is a sacred city and one of her temple was founded there. Furthermore, it was their tenth and last human Guru, Guru Gobind Singh was born in Patna and the shrine Harmandirji which has been built by the panjabischen Maharaja Ranjit Singh, marked his birthplace.

Patna is known as the birthplace of Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Chief Minister of Bihar and Railway Minister of India, for his Khaja ( a North Indian delicacy), its cotton mills, and the aquarium in the Sanjay Gandhi Zoo, which was named after the Indian politician, Sanjay Gandhi. The city has a well-known museum, will be exhibited in the stone and bronze sculptures and terracotta figures, which were created by Hindu and Buddhist artists, as well as other archaeological finds, such as a giant fossil tree.

Other attractions include the Oriental Library Khuda Baksh, which has a collection of historical works and various mosques, including the historic Begu Hajjam Mosque, built in 1489 by Alauddin Hussani Shan, the ruler of Bengul. The University of Patna was opened in 1917.

One of the oldest buildings, built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin during the British rule, the Gol Ghar, which means Spherical buildings and a hive -like shape describes. In response to the famine of 1770, it was used by the British as a granary. From the top of Gol Ghar has a view over the whole of Patna.

Education

The city is the seat of the Patna University, one of the oldest universities in India.
