Patos de Minas

Patos de Minas is a town in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. It is located 415 km from Belo Horizonte, and is located on the Rio Paranaíba at about 800 meters above sea level. The city had about 140,000 inhabitants in 2006. The territory of the city extends over 3189 km ².

A study by the Veja magazine from 2001 showed that Patos de Minas is with respect to the development sozioöokonomischen 1970-1996 the 5th place among 5000 cities. So 99% of the city streets are paved and include a public street lighting. 97 % of the inhabitants are supplied with clean water.

Patos de Minas is nationally known for its corn production; the city is known as corn capital of Brazil.

The colonization of present-day urban area probably began in the mid -18th century. The foundation of the city was 1868.
