Patriarch of Jerusalem

As Patriarch of Jerusalem today to officiate the heads of several different Christian churches of Jerusalem:

  • The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem is the successor of the early Christian Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
  • The Catholic Melkite Greek "Patriarch of Antioch and all the East " since 1838 also carries the title of Patriarch of Jerusalem and Alexandria. It is thus nominally head of three altkirchlicher Patriarchate.
  • The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem since 1954 and 1964 the only Latin patriarch in the east.

Since Jerusalem was raised by the Council of Chalcedon in 451 to patriarchy, this is not recognized by the Oriental Orthodox Churches, neither lead the competent Syrian Orthodox Metropolitan of Jerusalem ( Patriarchate of Antioch ) nor the Coptic Orthodox Bishop in Jerusalem ( Patriarchate of Alexandria ) the title of patriarch.

  • The Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem represents only the Armenian Apostolic Church in Jerusalem. He received his title until the middle ages and ranks among one of the Catholicos.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarch and the Syrian Orthodox Metropolitan be viewed both as a successor to the Chair of the Apostle James the Lord's brother, who is regarded as the first bishop of Jerusalem.

The Melkite Patriarchate and the Latin Patriarchate churches are part of the Roman Catholic Church.

There are in the Anglican Church a bishop of Jerusalem, who is to be regarded as an Anglican Partriarch of Jerusalem, but he never held the title of Patriarch.
