Paul Bassim

Paul Bassim OCD ( born November 14, 1922 in Zgharta, Lebanon; † 21 August 2012) was Vicar Apostolic of Beirut.

Life

Paul Bassim came from a Maronite Lebanese family. He joined the Order of the Discalced Carmelites and received on 29 June 1946, the ordination.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on 8 September 1974 Titular Bishop of Laodicea ad Libanum and Apostolic Vicar of the Latin Christians in Lebanon, based in Jeita. The Apostolic Nuncio in Lebanon and Apostolic Pro- Nuncio to Kuwait, Alfredo Bruniera, gave him on 24 November of the same year the episcopal ordination; Nasrallah Pierre Sfeir were co-consecrators, Auxiliary Bishop of Antioch, and Akiki Bonaventure, OFM, Vicar Apostolic of Aleppo.

Bassim was a member of the Conference of Latin Bishops in the Arab Regions. He was responsible for the pastoral care of the Afro-Asian migrants ( PCAAM ) living as migrant workers in the Arab regions.

On 30 July 1999 John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related.
