Paul Bérenger

Paul Raymond Bérenger ( born March 26, 1945 in Quatre Bornes ) is a Mauritian politician. He was from 30 September 2003 to July 5, 2005 Prime Minister of Mauritius.

Paul Bérenger comes from a generations resident in Mauritius French family. After years of study in France and Wales, he returned to Mauritius, where he was working as a journalist and trade unionist. He was one of the founders and for decades leader of the Socialist party Mouvement Militant Mauricien, for which he was first elected to Parliament in 1976. Since the 1980s he represented, inter alia, in the debate on the nationalization of the sugar industry more moderate positions and promoted during his reign the free market economy so that it is held only in name for a socialist.

Before Bérenger became prime minister, he was from 1991 to 1993 and from 1995 to 1997 foreign and finance minister from 2000 to 2003.
