Paul Degen

Paul Degen ( born March 24, 1941 in Basel, † 31 May, 2007 Liestal ) was a Swiss illustrator, caricaturist, painter and sculptor.

He was known primarily for his cartoons for the New York Times and its 34 covers for the magazine The New Yorker. He gained more fame in the 90s through the invention of the Roma birth wheel.

Life

After training as a lithographer at Wassermann AG in Basel and the closing of the School of Art Basel, Paul Degen continued his education in graphic studio of Theo Ballmer, Paris and at the Académie Julian, Paris continued. In the 60s Paul Degen worked as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator with Herbert Leupin, Celestino Piatti, Fritz Bühler and the studio Eidenbenz in Switzerland. In 1970 he moved to New York and worked alongside his freedom of action as a cartoonist and illustrator for the New York Times, Esquire, Harper 's Magazine and The Atlantic Monthly in the Push Pin Studios with Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast. After living in Brazil, Peru, Hawaii, Bali and his return to New York late 80s Paul Degen 1990 moved back to Liestal near Basel. Paul Degen died on 31 May 2007 in Liestal from the effects of surgery.
