The Paul- Ehrlich- Institut (PEI ) in Langen is the German Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines. The new name broke authorities on 23 July 2009 from the old name of the Federal Agency for Sera and Vaccines. It is a federal authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Health. It was named after its first director, the German physician and Nobel laureate Paul Ehrlich. On November 1, 1972, the Act to establish a Federal Agency for Sera and Vaccines into an independent federal authority.

Tasks

The Paul -Ehrlich -Institut is responsible for the approval and official batch release of biological medicinal products (see German Drug Law, Law on the Establishment of a Federal Agency for Sera and Vaccines ) and contributes significantly to the safety of these drugs. Since August 2004 ( 12th amendment of the Medicines Act ) the approval of clinical trials supported by him to drugs is one of the tasks of the Institute. Medicines that are evaluated by the Paul -Ehrlich -Institut, include vaccines and sera for human and animal allergen preparations, monoclonal antibody -derived medicinal products, advanced therapy medicinal products ( somatic cell therapy, gene therapeutics, tissue engineering products) and tissue preparations. In addition, research is one of the tasks of the Institute.

The World Health Organization (WHO ), the Paul -Ehrlich -Institut has determined the WHO Collaborating Centre for Quality Assurance of blood products and in vitro diagnostic medical devices.

Others

The Paul- Ehrlich- Institute awards the Paul Ehrlich Medal and the Langener Science Award to deserving scientists.

The PEI is a member of the Association of departmental research institutions.
