Paul Horn ( born March 17, 1930 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician whose primary instrument, the flute and (occasionally) are the soprano saxophone. First, he also played clarinet and alto saxophone. He is considered one of the founders of meditative New Age music.

Life and work

Horn studied music in Oberlin until 1952 and then completed his master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1956 he became a member of the Sauter - Finegan Orchestra; 1956 to 1958 he was a member of the quintet of Chico Hamilton, with whom he was known. In Los Angeles, he then led his own group and worked as a studio musician. He is on recordings by Duke Ellington, Gil Evans / Miles Davis (The Time of the Barracudas 1963), Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Lalo Schifrin to hear. In 1957 he published already recordings as a leader, then later as a soloist.

His first major musical successes came in 1966 with the award of the Grammy for his interpretation of jazz exhibition by Lalo Schifrin, " Jazz Suite on the Mass texts". The pressure to succeed drove him in an artistic dead end; increasingly he suffered from drug problems. One solution he sought and found with a stay at the ashram of the then very popular guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in Rishikesh, North India. With the help of the learned yoga practices he straightened his life a new. Its about 4 - month stay in India, he ended with a spontaneous recording at the Taj Mahal, which he recorded for private purposes. He sat down for after the evening closure alone in the central room, and sent with his flute sound structures in the room. He used the resultant Echo followed in the design of other sound patterns. Originally intended for personal use recordings were later published under the title "Inside the Taj Mahal " and became not only a commercial success. The album is now regarded as the impetus for the subsequent development of New Age music.

After his return from India, Horn operated as a yoga teacher and moved to Victoria (British Columbia). He subsequently took more albums in the Inside- series, which are essentially the same method, the game with the echo of structures emerged. In addition to these recordings he has more jazz and world music sheets produced with Egberto Gismonti and about with Nexus. Since 1973 he also has his own TV show in Canada. In the late 1970s he visited China several times; In 1983 he toured with David Friesen by the former Soviet Union.

In 2009 it came to the performance at the benefit concert "Change Begins Within" the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness - Based Education and World Peace, at Radio City Music Hall, New York, among others with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Donovan, Ben Harper, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder and Moby.
