Paul of Thebes

Paul of Thebes (* supposedly 228; allegedly † 341) is a Christian saint and named after the legend, the first Egyptian hermits and desert father, so also the Holy Paul the first hermit. His feast day is the 10th (Catholic ) or January 15 ( Orthodox). He is the patron saint of basket and mat-.

Life

The nowhere else documented life story of Saint Paul of Thebes ( Coptic Amba Bola ) is betrayed into the order of 376 Jerome wrote ( about 347-420 ) Vita Pauli primi eremitae. Thus, Paul was supposedly born in the year 228 as the son of wealthy Christian parents in Egypt and went to his parents' death and inheritance disputes with his brother during the persecution of Christians under Decius (249 /50) as the first Christian hermit and ascetic ( Anchorite ) in the Egyptian desert. He lived there for decades alone, supplied by a source, a palm tree and a raven who brought him daily half a loaf. When he was 113 years old, he was visited shortly before his death by the then 90 -year-old Anthony ( Anthony the Great, 251-356 ), which, in a vision of the existence of the adjacent older hermit was revealed in him on the way the desert preceded it. After the death of Paul Anthony had dug with the help of two lions, a grave for the St. Paul.

The actual, historical person of Paul of Thebes is doubtful. It is assumed that Jerome was located with its history rather because, highlighting his literary talent and the Vita Antonii of Athanasius (c. 300-373 ) to provide a counter-proposal for the Christian hagiography aside and surpass them with the presentation of an older Desert Saints.
