Paul Riley (English footballer)

Paul Riley ( born September 23, 1963 in Liverpool ) is an English former football player and current coach, who coached the franchise of the Portland Thorns FC in the National Women's Soccer League since the 2014 season.

Career

Player

Riley began his career in 1988 at the ASL participants Albany Capitals. After his contract was not renewed there, he moved on to league rivals New Jersey Eagles, where he remained until 1990. From 1991 to 1993 Riley played one season long for the teams Glen Cove, New York Hercules and Atlas in the unterklassigen New England Professional Soccer League. From 1994 up to end of his career in 1997, he ran on in the professional United States Interregional Soccer League for the Long Iceland Roughriders.

Coach

Before and during his active career Riley oversaw the football team of the Long Iceland University CW Post Campus, the C. W. Post Pioneers, the main responsibility first as an assistant coach from 1990 to 1997. In 1997 he took over the team of Long Iceland Roughriders, where he finished his career as a player, seamlessly as a head coach and looked after them until the year 2003.

From 2006 to 2009 Riley coached the WPSL franchise Long Iceland Fury, his first station in women's football. From 2010 he was head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in the WPS, where he was honored by the league as a coach of the year in the first year and 2011, the championship final after a penalty shoot-out against Western New York Flash lost. After the dissolution of WPS before the 2012 season, Riley moved to New York Fury, a " sister team " of Long Iceland Fury in the newly founded WPSL elite. For the 2014 season, he took over the NWSL participants Portland Thorns FC.
