Paul Rolland

Paul Rolland ( born November 11, 1911 in Budapest, † November 9, 1978 in Urbana / Illinois) was an American violist and teacher of Hungarian origin.

Rolland studied violin at Simpson College in Indianola (Iowa) (Bachelor) and at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest ( Master of Music, 1937). From 1935 to 1938 he was principal violist of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. With the through him founded Pro Ideal quartet he traveled the USA in 1938, where it was based at Westminster Choir College in Princetown. 1940 Rolland became an American citizen.

From 1945 until his death in 1978 taught Rolland at the University of Illinois at Urbana -Champaign, with a particular interest was the group lessons in strings classes. He first started Saturday classes for strings, later the Illinois Summer Youth Music Program, from which the University of Illinois String Research Project emerged. He was one of the founders in 1946 of the American String Teachers Organization ASTA, which he was president from 1964 to 1966. From 1950 to 1960 he was editor of the Journal of the American String Teacher, 1966-1974 Responsible for the publication of ASTA. He was, inter alia, the ASTA Distinguished Service Award (1973) and the bronze medal of the Ysaye Foundation (1975 ) excellent.
