Paul Scoon

Sir Paul Scoon GCMG, GCVO, OBE ( born July 4, 1935September 2, 2013 ) was a Grenadian politician. He was from 1978 to 1992 Governor General of Grenada.

Life

Scoon visited the St John 's Anglican School and the Grenada Boy's Secondary School. He studied at the London University, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Later he attended the Institute of Education at the University of Leeds.

With the revolution in 1979 to Grenada Scoon was deposed and imprisoned under Maurice Bishop by the New Jewel Movement ( NJM ). Only shortly before, he had been appointed Prime Minister Eric Gairy still under the Queen Elizabeth II in her capacity as head of state governor general.

Scoon was soon released and saw his task from now on is to perform the tasks as Governor General, despite the consider to constitute illegal government Bishops.

After the coup against Bishop by members of the new government in 1983 Scoon was jailed again, this time by the rebels under Bernard Coard.

Due to the U.S. invasion of Grenada in 1983, the Government of the NJM was eliminated. The U.S. government said that the invasion was an explicit desire Scoons. The held under house arrest Scoon was released at the beginning of the invasion. Scoon used his authority as Governor-General on the appointment of Nicholas Brathwaite as head of the government until the next election.

On 31 July 1992 Scoon resigned from his post.

The Queen appointed him in 1970 to the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE ) in 1979, Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George ( GCMG ) in 1985 and Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order ( GCVO ). Rotary International raised him in 1984 Paul Harris Fellow.
