Paul Usteri

Paul Usteri ( born February 14, 1768 in Zurich, † April 9, 1831 ) was a Swiss journalist and liberal politician.

Paul (initial Paul) Usteri was the eldest son of educators Usteri Leonhard ( 1741-1789 ). He was a physician and held the office of a Swiss State Council.

Usteri great merits acquired by the development of press freedom in Switzerland. Among other things, he was the editor of the magazines Clio and The Swiss Republican (1798-1803, most recently under the title " The Republicans "), in which mainly the principles of the Helvetic Republic were presented. His knowledge of the revolutionary developments in France he owed to his contacts with many of his contemporaries, which is politically and in terms of the revolution he committed ( including Johann Georg Kerner, Konrad Engelbert Oelsner, Karl Friedrich Reinhard). With the Salonnière Anna Maria Rüttimann joined him years of political correspondence.

Shortly before his death Usteri was chosen as the successor of Hans von Reinhard in the government of the Canton of Zurich. He died, however, before he could take office of the mayor of Zurich.

Usteri left behind one of the world's three largest collections of French Revolution pamphlets. It is now owned by the Zurich Central Library, and includes approximately 7500 brochures, which are united under the signature " Usteri " and fully indexed in the online catalog.
