Paulin Freitas

Paulin Freitas ( born December 3, 1909 in Lome, † May 17, 1989 in Abidjan ) was a Togolese politician and diplomat.

Life

Paulin Freitas came from the ruling family of Aného. He trained as a teacher and head of the Normal School in Atakpamé. In 1946 he was elected for the party Comité de l' unité togolaise (CUT) in the Parliament of French Togoland. In the elections of 1958, the CUT reached the majority and Freitas was appointed to the government of Prime Minister Sylvanus Olympio as Minister of State for Home Affairs, Information and Press. A post he retained until the independence of Togo from France on 27 April 1960. 's Government subsequently formed from nunmehrigen President Sylvanus Olympio Freitas was minister of state for external affairs. On January 13, 1963 Olympio was assassinated in a military coup. Paulin Freitas refused to cooperate with the new regime and was arrested and tortured. His successor as foreign minister Georges Apedo - amah. In May 1963 Freitas was released and left the country. He worked subsequently as an expert for UNESCO in Zaire and Paris. In 1978 he returned to Togo. Traumatised by his experiences as a result of January 13 1963, suffering from heart problems, died Freitas 1989. He was buried at the cemetery on the beach of Lome.
