Pauline at the Beach

Pauline at the beach is the third feature film in 1982 resulting from the cycle comedies and proverbs of Rohmer Eric.

Action

The 15 - year-old Pauline travels with her about ten years older, recently divorced cousin Marion to Normandy to spend the rest of the summer vacations at the cottage of the family. On the beach they meet Pierre, a former lover Marion, and learn whose acquaintance Henri know, which is about mid 30's. Henri invites her to dinner at his home, and Marion, looking for a new love, spends the night with him.

While Pierre Marion windsurfing school there, met Pauline at the beach the 17 -year-old Sylvain. Marion can Pierre, who has already declared her the night before his love, get rid of and meets again with Henri. She tries to hook up Pierre with Pauline, but reaps no success: Pauline, Pierre finds too old, while he is so fixated on Marion that he cares for no other girl. The next day invites Henri Pauline and Sylvain who have befriended, to his home. Marion watched the two teenagers as they lie together on the bed and kissing. She tells Henri them because she feels responsible for Pauline.

Marion and Pauline make a trip to Mont Saint- Michel, Henri and Sylvain meet on Louisette beach, a candy seller, and go back to Henri. Sylvain is sitting in front of the TV, while Henri sleeping with Louisette, with Louisette of Pierre is seen, which should come upon more or less at the house. As Marion returns, warns Sylvain Henri, but locks him along with Louisette into the bathroom and thus giving the impression at Marion, the two would have happily together. At her question: " givest thou now thy bed, " replied Henri hypocritical, he did not notice how the two had gone up.

Pierre visited Marion and tells her that he had seen Louisette in the bedroom of Henri. Marion can but convince him that Louisette with Sylvain slept, what Pierre then also behind Pauline brings that falls from the clouds and Sylvain no longer wants to see. Later Louisette Pierre tells the truth. Sylvain Henri provides for speech, accusing him furious to have destroyed his romance with Pauline. The next day, Marion needs to Paris, Pierre and Henri clarify Pauline about the misunderstanding on and apologize to her and Sylvain. However, Pauline's romantic feelings for Sylvain seem to still be cooled.

Pauline, who has stayed in the house of Henri, wakes up when he kisses her on the leg. With a strong kick she has the Overture back unequivocally, both take the matter but with humor. At breakfast Henri explains her that he will leave traveling to Quiberon and Marion. Disappointed by her male acquaintances decide Pauline and Marion to return prematurely to Paris.

Background

  • The film was shot in Carolles -Plage near Granville in Normandy.
  • Amanda Langlet, which gives as an actress Pauline her film debut, is also seen in other films of Eric Rohmer: in summer (1996 ) as well as in anthropology student Margot Triple Agent (2004) as Janine.
  • The poster above the bed of Pauline in House of Henri is a reproduction of the painting La Blouse roumaine by Henri Matisse. Rohmer had seen the reproduction in a bookstore before the start of filming and can be influenced in the visual design of the film by Matisse.
  • As a proverb Rohmer has the film preceded by a quote from Chrétien de Troyes. " Qui trop parole il se mesfait " ( "He who talks too much, itself lost " )

Awards

Pauline at the beach won at the 1983 Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear for Best Director and the French Critics Prize Prix Méliès.
