Paulo Wanchope
Paulo César Wanchope Watson ( born July 31, 1976 in Heredia ) is a former Costa Rican football player.
Association
Wanchope began his career at CS Herediano in Costa Rica. In 1997 he moved to England to Derby County, where he scored 28 goals in 79 games, he was finally obliged by West Ham United in 1999. Although he had already scored 15 goals in his first season in 46 games, he was then transferred to Manchester City. He had a regular place at City and grew with the club in 2002 in the FA Premier League. 2004 Wanchope was sold for 500,000 pounds to Spain to FC Málaga. There he stayed for one season in which he scored the only goal of the year in Spain, before joining Al- Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League. Due to the World Cup finals of Costa Rica in January 2006 he moved back to his home country to Herediano in order to better prepare the national team for the upcoming tournament can. After the World Cup, he moved to Argentina for Rosario Central. On 29 December 2006, he gave his well-known change in the Japanese J-League for FC Tokyo. On 16 November 2007 Paulo Wanchope ended his active career because of knee problems. Most recently, he was with the Chicago Fire SC under contract.
National
In the Costa Rican national soccer team Wanchope played a central role. In just 71 games the striker scored 45 goals. Through his 43rd goal in their 3-0 World Cup qualifier against the United States on October 8, 2005, he assumed the position of the record striker for the national team of his country. His greatest success with the national team were participating in the 2002 World Cup and second place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2002. Too at the Football World Cup 2006 in Germany, he was the main player of his team and scored in the opening match in Munich against hosts Germany both goals for Costa Rica. He scored another championship match has been in the 2002 World Cup at 2:5 against the eventual champions Brazil.
Since September 2011, he acts for the Costa Rican national soccer team in the role of assistant coach.
