Pavel Kogan (conductor)

Pavel Leonidovich Kogan (Russian Павел Леонидович Коган; born June 6, 1952 in Moscow ) is a Russian conductor.

Life

Kogan is the son of Russian violinist Leonid Kogan and his wife, the violinist Elesaveta Gilels, sister of the Russian pianist Emil Gilels.

Kogan studied at the Central Music School in Moscow and the State P. I. - Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. The age of eighteen he won the Sibelius Prize in Helsinki. As a result, he was hired as a concert soloist with orchestras in Russia, Europe, Japan and the United States. His debut as a conductor, he was in 1974 with the Leningrad Philharmonic. In the following years he worked as a guest conductor. From 1988 to 1990 Kogan was Chief Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic. Since 1990, Kogan is chief conductor and artistic director of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra.

1997 Kogan has made a concert tour in the U.S., where he led the Utah Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra conducted, the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. He is a member of the jury of the International Rotary music competition for children in Moscow. His first concert as conductor of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra was recorded live by RCA. His records include, among others, all Tchaikovsky symphonies, Prokofiev Symphonies 1, 5 and 6 and the complete cycle of Mahler symphonies.
