Pearl Abraham

Pearl Abraham ( born October 16, 1960 in Jerusalem, Israel) is an American author and high school teacher.

Life

Abraham grew up as the third of nine children in a Hasidic family. At the age of five she moved with her family to New York City. After several moves to Israel and back to New York, she has lived in this city since the age of 12 years. Your education was depending on where you live either in Yiddish or in English.

Abraham graduated from Hunter College in Manhattan and earned a Master of Fine Arts ( MFA) in creative writing at New York University. After that, she taught at her alma mater, Sarah Lawrence College and the University of Houston. Today ( 2013) is Assistant Professor of English Language at the Western New England University and divides his time between Springfield and New York City.

Work

Abraham has published four novels and was the editor of an anthology in Dutch with the title: Een vrouw sterke: Jewish Heroines in Literature. Her short stories and essays published in various journals.

Prizes and awards

  • Abraham's novels were in bestseller lists and lists of proposed several literary awards.
  • 1995: Best Book of 1995 by Library Journal for The Romance Reader.
  • 2006 Shamus Award for best short story about a private investigator for Hassidic Noir.
