Pec pod Sněžkou

The town of Pec pod Sněžkou ( German telltale ) is located in the Czech part of the Giant Mountains at the foot of Snow Mountain and has 703 inhabitants (as of 2006). The place belongs to Okres Trutnov.

Geography

Around the city are located in the Giant Mountains National Park, the highest peak of the Czech Republic: Sněžka ( ) 1602 m, Studniční ( Brunnenberg ) with 1554 m and Luční hora ( mountain meadows ) with 1547 m. The altitude of Pec is given as 769 m.

The public road from the Aupatal ends in Pec. Bus lines connect the city with Trutnov, Hradec Králové, Prague, Vrchlabí, Spindleruv Mlyn and Harrachov. The nearest train station is in Svoboda nad Úpou.

History

The giant ground ( Obří dul ) is the starting point for the formation of Pec. Mainly arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite - - were funded in 1511, the first mention of the place where until 1959 ores come. The settlement Pec was only at the end of the 16th century, when it was still part of Velka Upa. In Pec settled foresters from Styria, Carinthia and Tyrol, who secured the wood supply for the silver mines in Kutna Hora. They built the first chalets in Pec.

In the second half of the 19th century set in the Giant Mountains and thus also in a Pec tourism. Pec became a popular summer resort and because of its location below the highest peak of this mountain range to the well-attended winter.

Attractions

Pec and Velka Upa are tourist resorts with a little agriculture. It offered 8,500 guest beds. A chairlift opens up over the stopover Růžová hora all year the summit of Snow Mountain. Other lifts serve the winter sports.
