Purus dwarf Pleco ( Peckoltia brevis )

The Purus dwarf Pleco ( Peckoltia brevis ) is a species of the family Loricariidae. The German name already indicates the sheltering in the Brazilian Amazon tributary Rio Purus. This species is also in the catchment area of the Rio Ucayali in Peru before.

Features

This small permanent Harnischwelsart is up to twelve inches long. The body is light brown with black spots in the head region and black stripes all over the body area. The striped pattern is particularly apparent on the fins. Males develop on the anterior chest fins and the back body portion bristling odontodes. Females also have a slightly larger body size and are colored darker.

Way of life

Although this peaceful, omnivore Loricariid shows territorial but not aggressive. The fish is a hole-nesting birds. In the aquarium, the water temperature should be about 22-26 degrees and lie of pH 5.8 to 7.8.

Designation

The species was described in 1935 by La Monte. The scientific name Peckoltia brevis reminiscent of Gustavo Peckolt, member of the Natural History Commission of Rondon. The addition brevis describes the short body shape. In the hunting and the type was introduced in 2004 with the designation LDA78.

Similar Species

The scientifically undescribed species Peckoltia sp. L205, is down to the extent of puncturing the head, very similar.
