Pécsvárad

Pécsvárad [ pe ː ː tʃva rɒd ] ( German Petschwar, Croatian: Pečvar ) is a city founded in the Middle Ages, with over 4,000 inhabitants in southern Hungary in Baranya county. The city is located in the east of the Mecsek Mountains on the hill slope Zengő, near the nature reserve Eastern Mecsek Mountains. Along the main road 6 is 17 km to the southwest to the city of Pécs.

Benedictine Abbey and Castle

The place was the Benedictine abbey, the king Saint Stephen in the year 1000 founded a center for the Hungarian state and church development. The first abbot of the Benedictine bishop was Astrik upon whom the task of Stephen I to bring the crown of the Pope. The monastery was consecrated in 1015, the same year as the first castle (see Vár ).

Built as a monastery in the 13th century castle of Pécsvárad is one of Hungary's most important monuments from the Middle Ages. The best preserved were the old donjon ( now a hotel), the 15 meter long ship of the Collegiate Church and the frescoed sanctuary. The Castle Museum is, however, in the castle of the 18th century; it shows, inter alia, archaeological finds from the area of the castle and abbey. The neo-Gothic town hall, in front of the Holy Trinity statue stands, was built in 1857 under the Italian architect Gianone.

Around the town

The area surrounding the town has numerous historical and natural monuments. Every year in the spring (April), the St. George's Festival held in August (usually 10 to 20 August ), a summer theater and in October a folk art market with a procession on the occasion of the harvest.
