Peddars Way

The Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path National Trail, with its total length of 156 km (97 miles) is one of 15 official long-distance footpaths in England and Wales, the National Trails, which is completely up to the first kilometer in Norfolk. It consists of two parts with very different histories, which are now managed as a single trail and marketed.

Peddars Way

The unit is called Peddars Way part of the long-distance route is 74 km (46 miles) long and follows the course of a Roman road.

It is believed by various authors that the Peddars Way was not created by the Romans, but was even an old way, possibly a turn or an extension of the Celtic Icknield Way, which was used, and rebuilt by the Romans. The name can be from the Latin pedester - are derived on foot. He is first mentioned on a map of 1587.

Norfolk Coast Path

Called the Norfolk Coast Path part of the long-distance route is 72 km (45 miles) and follows the coast from Hunstanton to Cromer. It was opened in 1986 and is located entirely in the nature reserve North Norfolk Coast AONB.

Route

The trail begins at the end of the Icknield Way at Knettishall Heath in Suffolk, about 7 km (4 miles) east of Thetford near the Norfolk - Suffolk border. It is usually divided into 8 -day stages.

Attractions

Murals in the church of Houghton -on-the -Hill, the Monastery of Castle Acre, Burnham Thorpe ( birthplace of Horatio Nelson), seal colony at Blakeney Point, the railway museum North Norfolk Railway with the steam locomotives used there.

Conjunction with other trails

At the beginning of the path at Knettishall Heath is a node with the Icknield Way and The Angles Way. At the end of the path at Cromer there is a transition into the Weavers Way. The four trails Weavers Way, The Angles Way, Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path allow a complete round trip through Norfolk.

The Peddars Way is one of four distance hiking trails that will run from Lyme Regis to Hunstanton and together referred to as the Greater Ridgeway.
