Peder Severin Krøyer

Peder Severin Krøyer ( born July 23, 1851 in Stavanger, † November 21, 1909 at Skagen ), known as PS Krøyer, was a Norwegian- Danish painter of the artistic community Skagen painters. His works are mainly attributable to the Impressionist painting outdoors.

Life

Peder Severin Krøyer was raised by an aunt in Copenhagen. His talent was already as a child. That's why he was already 14 years old at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. As a young artist he undertook from 1877 to 1881 wide study trips to France, Spain and Italy. His inspirations he picked up especially in Paris, where he attended a private school of painting. He was in his home soon after his return to Copenhagen in demand as a portrait painter.

In the summer of 1882 Krøyer first came to Skagen. From now on, he came every summer to Skagen. He was particularly enthusiastic nature and especially the company with the other artists in the artists' colony. In 1891 came with his wife Marie. In 1894 they rented the former reeve house in Skagen Forestry and rebuilt it.

Famous is his landscape painting and portraiture. His pictures show a carefree life of the artist, their festivals, walks on the beach and atmospheric evenings in the moonlight.

After 1900 Krøyer mentally ill and had to be treated several times in Middelfart in the local mental hospital. He probably suffered from a manic- depressive psychosis. His grave is located on the Skagen cemetery.

One of his most famous pupil was the poster artist and genre painter Brynolf Wennerberg.
