Pedro Alonso Niño

Pedro Alonso Niño, known as El Negro ( * 1468 in Moguer, † 1505) was a Spanish navigator.

Life

Niño was born near the city of Huelva and was known as El Negro. He participated in several Portuguese expeditions to Africa and accompanied Christopher Columbus on his third voyage. In 1499 he explored together with Christopher de la Guerra, the coast of Venezuela, from where he returned with pearls and color wood to Spain. Niño was accused by the king of theft and was sent to prison, where he died before his trial.
