Pedro Bermúdez

Pedro Bermúdez (* 1558 in Granada, Spain, † 1605 in Puebla de los Ángeles, New Spain ) was a Spanish composer of polyphonic choral works for the Catholic liturgy.

Life

In his childhood he sang in the choir of the Cathedral of Granada, where he grew up as an apprentice of Domkapellmeister Santos de Aliseda. It is possible that he in the royal court orchestra took composition lessons with the great composer Rodrigo de Ceballos. 1584 was Bermúdez Kapellmeister in Antequera, a post he held for two years under constant pressure of the church council, until he was dismissed due to his lack of training readiness. Back in his native city, he first got a part-time employment as a singer in the Royal Chapel.

In 1595 he was invited by the newly appointed Bishop of Cuzco, Peru, to take over the musical direction of the cathedral. After a long journey across the Atlantic, he met in 1597 in Cuzco, where he took the post of Kapellmeister. After just seven weeks, however, he traveled further and came in 1598 in Santiago de Guatemala (now Antigua Guatemala ) to. Here he sat down, took care of the music of the cathedral and composed the bulk of his work preserved.

He remained until 1603 in Guatemala, when the board of the Cathedral of Puebla de los Ángeles, New Spain attracted him by a far higher salary. Bermúdez took the offer and went to Puebla, where he could compose a Salve Regina nurmehr and then suddenly died. He was succeeded by Gaspar Fernandes.
