Pedro Machuca

Pedro Machuca (* 1490 in Toledo, † August 4, 1550 in Granada) was a Spanish painter and architect of the Renaissance.

Life

After his studies in Florence, where he da Sangallo learned the principles of Renaissance architecture in Giuliano, he returned to Granada ( 1520). Initially, he worked mainly as a painter, but was appointed by the Emperor Charles V. to chief architect of the Alhambra in 1527 and took over the construction of a palace. This palace of Charles V was significantly different from the surrounding Moorish architecture and is an almost classic example of the High Renaissance style of Donato Bramante and Raphael. The construction was continued by Machucas son Luis, but remained unfinished.
